The Kentlands is a 342-acre community in Gaithersburg, Maryland (a suburb of Washington, DC), designed for a population of 5,000 people. The site includes a mix of 1600 residential units, more than 1 million square feet of retail, 1 million square feet of office space, and 64 acres of open space. The town center features apartments above ground-floor retail. Residences vary from single-family detached to carriage houses to townhouses to apartments. The community includes a school, library, recreation areas and open space. Design codes regulate construction materials and design elements. The community was designed by Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.
